Baby CPR With St John Ambulance

As a parent, one of my worst fears in life is that something bad will happen to one of my children. I try my best to keep them safe, at all times. Sometimes no matter what we do to try and prevent the accidents and illnesses do occur in babies and young children. Often cuddles and calpol or a kiss and bandage will make everything ok when little ones have accidents or become unwell.

What if they became really unwell though and stopped breathing, would you know what to do then? Being in that situation does not bear thinking about, does it? As parent's I think we need to think about it though, I think we should all know basic first aid, as we honestly never know when we will need it.

When my middle child was two weeks old she went quiet and floppy in my arms, I thought she was dozing at first. I soon realised that actually she was not breathing and was turning blue. Luckily I use to work in social care so I was first aid trained regularly,  I realised she was chocking on her curdled sick and I knew exactly what to do as my first aid training come flooding back to me.

Thankfully our story had a happy ending, if I had not of been first aid trained and acted fast I dread to think what the outcome may have been. St John Ambulance has revealed that only 1 in 4 parents would know what to do if their child stopped breathing, so they have come up with a video to try and help parents learn and remember how to perform CPR.

I remember when I attended my first aid training and we had to practise doing CPR on dummies to the beat of The Bee Gees song 'Staying Alive' - true story. Doing CPR on a child is slightly different to on an adult, so if you are first aid trained in an adult it is worth watching to learn the difference. The video has been created with Nursery Rhymes Inc and is short and catchy and will hopefully help you remember what to do if you ever find yourself needing to give CRP to a baby or child (Fingers tightly crossed you never have too).

Go on Give it a watch, learn the skills and remember the rhyme.

Disclosure: I have not been compensated for this post, I just thought that it was a worthwhile campaign that I wanted to share.
