As a mum of three, with a partner who works shifts, midweek evening meals can be a bit hectic. I am often solo parenting whilst keeping an eye on and trying to entertain my two and three years old and trying (and often failing) to help my teen with her homework. So trying to make a healthy, tasty home cooked family evening meal whilst dealing with the chaos of family life, is let's face it sometimes a bit of a struggle.
As a family, we are not a fan of frozen or microwaved foods, much preferring to have a proper meal around the table each evening. This is where Dolmio come to the rescue, I am sure you are all familiar with the iconic when is your Dolmio day adverts? Well as a busy mum I always have a jar of Dolmio bolognese stashed in the kitchen pantry for those days where we want a healthy, tasty meal but we are short on time.
Creating a meal is quick and easy and spaghetti bolognese is a meal that the whole family enjoys, plus it is surprisingly rather healthy for a jar as you can see in the chart above. A 500g jar of Dolmio bolognese contains 10 juicy tomatoes, tomato puree, half an onion, a tablespoon of sunflower oil, some cloves of garlic, a handful of herbs, a teaspoon of cornflower, a teaspoon of salt, a pinch of pepper, two teaspoons of beet sugar, squeeze of lemon and a splash of water. That is it no hidden ingredients or anything nasty, just wholesome goodness and it even provides you with one of your five a day before you add any extra veg too.
So when I was recently challenged with taking part in the Britmums Dolmio #ThankGoodness challenge I was keen to take part. I was sent a grocery delivery from Tesco that contained everything that I would need to create some tasty Dolmio inspired meals. I have seen people create things such as lasagne's, chillis and fajitas with the sauce but I decided to keep things simple and just stick to simple spaghetti bolognese.
It literally took me minutes to prepare this dish, I added spaghetti to some boiling water then chopped some mushrooms and beef mince and browned them off in a pan. Once cooked I added the jar of Dolmio, simmered and then served with the cooked spaghetti and topped with Italian cheese. It was super quick, very simple and I only used two pans so it saves on the washing up too - which is always a bonus!
Most importantly of all my children enjoyed their meal and ate it without any complaints. Anything that makes us parent's lives that little bit easier gets the big thumbs up from me and Dolmio certainly makes meal times easier for me and my family.
When is your Dolmio day?
