Lunch At Toby Carvery

On Thursday we had such a busy morning, we had people around to discuss our upcoming renovation work, we had errands to run and some more Christmas shopping to get done. As we had been so busy we had totally forgotten about lunch and we were starving, I really did not feel like cooking so we decided to head to Toby Carvery as I was craving a roast dinner. We are big fans of Toby carvery, when I was pregnant with Sophia I used to visit weekly. We visit less often now we have the nursery and school routines to stick too, it has been a few months since we last visited so we were long overdue a visit.

Toby Carvery regular carvery meal review

We headed to our local branch which is at Shiremoor, near Northumberland Park metro station and just off the A19. We have visited this branch a few times in the past as my other halfs family live close by and we have always found it to be welcoming for children. Toby Carvery has recently launched a new menu and now they have dishes such as Yorkshire pudding wraps, taster starters and freakshake milkshakes to accompany their famous four roasts carvery.

Roast joints of meat

As we were visiting at lunch-time we decided to skip starters and heading straight for the carvery counter, including the children. The thing I love about Toby is that they always have a choice of four roast meats to choose from, Turkey, Gammon, Beef and Pork and you can either just pick one or two meats or a little bit of all four if you fancy. We all picked different meat combinations, I went for Turkey which was delicious and juicy, not at all dry.

We all piled our plates with the huge yorkshire puddings, crispy roast potatoes and parsnips, mash and vegetables and poured on plenty of rich gravy. Everything was delicious, the roast potatoes were the nicest I have ever tasted from Toby, they were really crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The mash was creamy, veg nicely cooked and the yorkshire puddings and gravy were perfect as always.

The children demolished their meals, the meat, yorkshire puddings and carrots were cleared from their plates in no time at all. My brother and his family and my dad were actually at Toby Carvery at the same time as us and they all really enjoyed their meals too and commented on how nice it was.

We were all suitably stuffed from such a delicious and filling roast but we decided to order desserts, for research purposes of course. We opted for a Muchie sundae and a cheesecake to share with the children. Desserts were a good portion size and very tasty, so much so that the children ended up eating most of them.

The service we received was brilliant from our server's James and Katie, they were really friendly and brilliant with the children.I was really impressed because they did not know that we were there to review so we received the same service a regular customer would. The only slight niggle we did have was that a lot of the puddings seemed to be out of stock and service was a little slow at time, but this could not be helped as we visited when it was busy.

For four of us, two adults and two children (aged 3 & 4) it came to about £38 for a carvery each, a cheesecake and munchie sundae dessert, two refillable adult soft drinks and two children's fruit shoots. Adult weekday regular carvery was just £6.49 which is amazing value and children's are priced at £4.45.

We left with full tummies all around and we had a nice time catching up with family. I always think you can't beat a roast at this time of year and our carvery really hit the spot and best of all no washing up! Next week we are getting a new kitchen fitted and we will be without a kitchen for a few days, so I think we will definitely be revisiting Toby Carvery again for another weekday roast or one of the new dishes on the menu.

You can find your local Toby Carvery and view the menu at www.tobycarvery.co.uk

Disclosure I received a voucher to cover the cost of my meal at Toby Carvery for the purpose of this review, however, all opinions are my own.

  1. We love our local toby carvery. I go there with my friends for dinner when we have time to meet. We use to go as a family all the time but finding something for the boys with their dietary requirements is pretty difficult. xx

  2. I absolutely love a good roast and you can't beat a Toby Carvery for good value. So important to get the roasties right isn't it! And that dessert looks absolutely amazing, I love a sundae (always find that extra bit of room for one!) I've not been to a Toby Carvery in years though, you've reminded me what a great family option it is.
