Kafeneon Greek Restaurant Newcastle

One of my favourite places to eat in Newcastle is Kafeneon Greek, located in the Bigg Market area of Newcastle. As it is so centrally located it is ideal for a lunch date while shopping or as a evening meal before a show or for date night. I have visited a few times over the years and each time I have really enjoyed my visit to Kafeneon.

I recently visited with my adult daughter before we went to see a show at the Tyne Theatre, it was her first time visiting and she really enjoyed it too. As we were visiting before a theatre show we arrived at around 5pm and managed to get a seat straight away. There was plenty of people sitting outdoors enjoying the last of the sun on the terrace but we decided to dine indoors.

Kafeneon Newcastle Greek happy hour main

As we were visiting before 7pm on a weekday we were able to dine from the happy hour menu which is two courses for £14.95 - amazing value! The happy hour menu is available Sunday - Thursday between 12pm and 7pm and has a choice of a starter and main.

Starters were dishes such as grilled halloumi, which I ordered, Spetsofai which my daughter ordered and they also had deep fried saganaki or dips with pita bread. Mains on the happy hour menu include grilled souvlaki - which we both ordered, Beef Stifado, gyros, moussaka and Yemista peppers.

Service was quick and friendly and our starters and drinks arrived promptly. My halloumi starter was cooked lovely, it was four generous slices on a bed of lettuce. My daughters starter was a good sized portion of spicy Greek sausage in a pepper and tomato sauce. It came with salad, tzatziki and breads and was very filling and tasty.

Onto mains and we didn't have long to wait for these to arrive we both went for the grilled chicken souvlaki which is my favourite. You get two big chicken souvlaki skewers with delicious home made chips, Greek salad, tzatziki and bread.

We were far to full for dessert but my daughter did get a chocolate milkshake with her meal which she really enjoyed. We both enjoyed our food, it was delicious, fresh and full of flavour. Our total bill was £36.60 which I thought was very good value for two starters and mains plus a soft drink and milkshake.
