I have never been a big fan of sports, I don't play any and I don't watch them either, I am unfit, lazy and to be honest it just is not really my thing. However being a mum means that my whole outlook on life has changed as I don't want my own children following in my footsteps, I want them to be fit and active and enjoy sports. Having a teenage daughter has highlighted to me just how my actions impact upon my children as she is so like me and hates sports too these days and I want to change that.
With Wimbledon being on the TV and the media full of talk of tennis recently this got me thinking that actually my teen does not dislike all sports as she actually really enjoys tennis. Whenever she goes on holiday she loves to play tennis, weirdly enough so did I as a child. It is a sport that is cheap, easy to play and suitable for all the family and I imagine would be a brilliant activity for the whole family to enjoy together.
I wondered why we only play it on holiday and I realised it was because it is easy to play on holiday as most hotels have tennis courts on site and at home I would not really know where to play. Then I heard about a campaign from the National Lawn Association called the Great British Tennis Weekend, which sounds ideal for us as a family. The idea behind the campaign is you simply sign up for one of their free tennis sessions at a club near where you live and then the whole family can enjoy a game of tennis. For people living in Newcastle the local club is located in Jesmond and there is also clubs in Rothbury in Northumberland too. The free sessions will be running next weekend, Saturday the 16th and Sunday the 17th July so make sure you book a place quick!
I have decided to book my teen and partner on a session, fingers crossed the weather stays nice as it has rained here in Newcastle almost every day for weeks now. I think that it will be a great activity for them to do together that they will both enjoy (keep an eye on my social media next weekend for photos). I am sure that when my little two are a little older then they will love taking part too as it is a great sport for children and families to enjoy together. Hopefully we will become a family of sport lovers (myself included) and my children won't follow in my footsteps after all.
Do you enjoy tennis ?
I'm working with the Lawn Tennis Association on their #GBTW campaign. Sign up for your FREE tennis activity here https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/OpenDays.
I hope your teenager finds she enjoys the tennis and good luck with it all! It's easy to pass on our thoughts to our kids so well done in turning that around! #GBTW
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Nadine, I am sure she will love it. I am hoping it will distract her from the ipad xx
DeleteI'm getting so sick of the rain!! Luckily we managed a few games out in Spain last month and loved it. Fingers crossed for sunshine next weekend x
ReplyDeleteI am so sick of the rain, it is so nice and sunny now but bother it was raining so much. Fingers tightly crossed that it does not rain next weekend xx
DeleteNo and neither does my husband. But I wouldn't mind if T does, although she hasn't "discovered" it yet. My mother-in-law though loves watching Wimbledon ;)
ReplyDeleteI think it is a great sport for children, I need to get fit too xx
DeleteWimboldon has made my kids go out this week and play tennis :) They love it ..
ReplyDeleteI am glad that your kids are enjoying it, I think it is brilliant when things on Tv encourage children to get active xx
DeleteI love playing tennis on holiday too - always makes my week if there is a tennis court to knock the ball around on.
ReplyDeleteIt is great when you discover a tennis court on holiday, I hope there is a one when we go away next year xx
DeleteI must admit I'm not keen on tennis but I think it would be great activity for children to do. My hubby doesn't mind tennis though.
ReplyDeleteI loved it as a child, I am not very good at it but think it is good fun xx
DeleteThis looks so fun can't wait till our little girl is old enough to play tennis!
ReplyDeleteI am hoping my little two will love it when we go on holiday next year so that we can all play together xx
DeleteIt's definately one for all the family. Beats playing football! #GBTW
ReplyDeleteI am not a football fan at all, tennis is much more fun xx
DeleteI hope your kids enjoy playing tennis. I never really managed to get into tennis, we played st school but I hated it.
ReplyDeleteThank you I am sure we will. That is a shame you did not enjoy it at school, I have found I enjoy things now that I hated at school x
DeleteI will be hoping for good weather also as we're all booked onto a session too. Hope it is a great weekend for you x
ReplyDeleteI hope that you have a great time and enjoy your session, fingers crossed for sun next weekend xx
DeleteI was not good at tennis. I enjoyed volley ball though. Wonder what my kids would enjoy doing.
ReplyDeleteLove this and am with you 100%! I am super lazy but I refuse to let my children see that side of me. Mr F's family are the type to have a game of rounders on the beach and pre-kids I never joined in. But, now that the girls are here you will always find me joining in with any spontaneous sport that happens my way. It is a good feeling, changing your ways for the good of your kids. x
ReplyDeleteI am glad I am not the only one! I totally agree that it is good to change for are children, I find I do so much more since having them too. Your husbands family sound lots of fun xx
DeleteI absolutely love tennis - I haven't played it in years mind, but anytime I do I enjoy it. I'll be sending my sins to tennis camp in the summers when they're older.
ReplyDeleteI have not played for years either, I love the sound of tennis club xx
DeleteWe are not terribly sporty in my family I am afraid. My teens did enjoy tennis in school though. Kaz x
ReplyDeleteMy teen has not played it at school yet, I hope she does soon as she loves tennis xx
DeleteI cannot wait to give my cardio session a go next week
ReplyDeleteI am keeping my fingers crossed that the weather is nice next week for us all xx
DeleteI have no hand to eye coordination when it comes to tennis, I am totally useless x
ReplyDeleteI have terrible coordination too , I do enjoy playing though as it is fun and does not feel like exercise xx
DeleteNot kids yet but I would want them to try out every sport until they know which they love the most even though I am not too big on sports myself
ReplyDeleteI want my children to try every sport too, I like the idea of tennis being a family sport though x
DeleteWe do love a game of tennis and it was something we did together when me and Hubby started dating 30 years ago. We have taken it up again Thanks to #GBTW
ReplyDeleteI love that you played it all them years ago, I hope that you get to play again soon xx
DeleteIt is great that you are encouraging your kids to love sports. They will definitely love tennis as it is a cool sport! For me it is my favourite.
