Fish And Chips At Spanish City Whitley Bay

Visiting Whitley Bay and looking for somewhere for fish and chips? Then read on to find out all about fish and chips at Trenchers restaurant in Spanish City right on the seafront.

Spanish City

The iconic Spanish City dome reopened a few years ago after restoration from its funfair heyday. The huge dome shaped building is located right on the seafront in Whitley bay and it is hard to miss it. It is a wedding venue, restaurant, tea room and also has a few shops and bars at the front too, as well as the very popular Trenchers fish and chip restaurant. Trenchers offer a eat in or take away service, perfect for if you want to enjoy your chips on the beach just a stones throw away.

Spanish City

Spanish City is imposing and rather grand looking and it feels a bit special visiting as it has lovely high-ceilings and is tastefully decorated. There is a small car park right behind the venue or there is a much bigger car park just a few minutes walk away on the seafront which we always use.

Trenchers

Trenchers is on the ground floor straight ahead when you enter via the grand front entrance of Spanish City. We visited on a weekday tea time and did not have a booking but were seated straight away, if visiting at busy times then I would recommend booking a table in advance as it can get busy.

Trenchers sells traditional fish and chip dishes such as cod, haddock, scampi, jumbo sausage and pies. They have a range of starters which included oysters, soups, mussels, prawns and bruschetta which we didn't try on our visit. As well as the traditional chip shop style meals on the main menu they also have dishes such as steak, salmon and burgers.

We were there for a quick meal before the children were performing in a concert at the nearby playhouse so just went for traditional fish and chips on our visit.

Kids Meals

We visited with the children aged 8 and 10 years old who both dined off the children's menu. The children's menu includes three courses plus a drink of milk or cordial for £7.50 which I think is good value. The children were made to feel very welcome and offered colouring sheets, there was lots of other children dining at Trenchers too when we visited.

The starter was vegetable sticks (cucumber, carrots, peppers) with a pot of hummus. My son loves this so demolished it but my daughter is fussy and didn't touch it. This is the only starter available on the children's menu.

On to mains and there was a choice of cod bites, scampi, chicken nuggets, sausage, a pasta dish or vegan sausage on the menu. The mains (excluding the pasta) come with chips and a choice of beans or peas. My son chose the scampi with chips and beans and my daughter had cod bites with chips and asked for no beans or peas (she's very fussy).

The kids meals were a really good portion size and my two really enjoyed their food. For dessert children get a choice of ice-cream sundae, brownie, sticky toffee pudding, sorbet or knickerbocker glory. My daughter had the sticky toffee pudding and my son the knickerbocker glory - which was huge!

The children's menu highlighted what foods were gluten free, vegan, vegetarian etc and I was impressed to see there was the choice of a vegan and gluten free option on both the main and dessert menu for children with allergies.

Adult Meals

I ordered the regular cod and chips (£14.95) the cod was nice and not greasy but it was a bit on the small side. The chips were nice enough but just pretty average and again the portion size was fairly small - I had about the same amount as the children.

My older daughter ordered the battered jumbo sausage and chip meal (£11.95) this came with a pot of curry sauce and her portion size was good. She really enjoyed her meal and said the curry sauce was delicious. I think I would definitely get what she got next time.

She also got a pudding of sticky toffee pudding with ice cream (£6.50) which she really enjoyed. They had an impressive pudding cabinet full of trifles, brownies, cheesecakes and tarts.

Overall we enjoyed our visit to Trenchers Spanish City as the setting was beautiful and the kids meals were really good value. I would definitely return but would probably try something else the next time I visit.

It is worth keeping an eye on the Trenchers Spanish City website  as they often have special offers on. When we visited they had a kids eat free offer which they sometimes run during term time. So the total bill was under £40 for two adult mains, one adult pudding, two adult soft drinks and two children's three course meals plus drinks.

If your in Whitley Bay and looking for somewhere for fish and chips then I would recommend a visit to Trenchers Spanish City.
