Clip n Climb Metrocentre Review

Looking for something fun to do in the Metrocentre, well what about Clip n Climb? We visited recently with my children aged 8 and 9 years old and they had great fun.

Located inside the Metrocentre shopping mall in  Tyne and Wear, near to Namco funscape and the cinema you will find Clip n Climb. You can't miss it as the climbing walls and obstacles are fun, colourful and some are very high and go up to the first floor of the centre. There are 26 different challenges varying in difficulty and height.

What Is Clip n Climb?

There are Clip n Climb centres all over the UK and they are fun for the whole family. They are colourful climbing walls and obstacles suitable for anyone as no previous experience is needed. You don't need to buy any specialist equipment or anything either, just wear comfy clothes you will be able to climb in (my children wore joggers and leggings) and trainers.

During the session you get to go on any of the obstacles that you want, you just make your own way around the course at your own speed and you can go on your favourite ones more than once if you want too.

During The Visit

You can just walk in and pay on the day if there is space, but as we visited on a weekend we decided to pre-book in advance online that morning. It cost £14.50 per child for a 90 minute session, which was a 30 minute safety briefing and then 60 minutes of climbing.

On arrival the children were giving a coloured wrist band each and sat through a video safety briefing. They were then fitted with a harness by the staff, children can climb on their own and grown ups can watch for free.

To go on one of the obstacles you need to attach yourself to the safety rope and you are unable to climb until you are attached properly. If the safety mat is down on the floor someone is using the obstacle so keep out the way, if it is up you can use the obstacle. We did find it a bit fiddly attaching the children to the safety ropes but once we got the hang of it then it was fine.

Even though we had pre-booked it was super busy when we visited and the children ended up having to queue to go on everything and only got to go on five of the obstacles during the time slot which was a shame.

They also wanted to go on the vertical drop slide which is an extra £3 per person for two goes, you can book this in advance or you can pay at the desk when there like we did.

What We Thought

The children had fun and enjoyed the experience however due to it being so busy when we visited they were a bit disappointed they did not get to go on everything and spent more time queuing then climbing.

The climbing walls that they did get to go on were fun and they enjoyed the drop slide. It would have also been nice if there was staff on the floor to help with attaching the safety ropes to the harnesses as we struggled at first and so did a lot of other children and parents. The only staff we seen were at the drop slide and the stairway to heaven that was it.

However the children did enjoy it and have asked to go back someday, hopefully it will be less busy next time so we can go on more. I think we were just unlucky when we visited as it was really busy with people from previous sessions as there wasn't many people on our session.

It was fun for the children and something different for them to do, it helped keep them active and get a bit more confident with heights which is a good thing.

Extra Information

There is a small cafe area with tables and chairs if your children are older and you want to grab a drink while they climb or after they have climbed. There are toilets nearby in the centre and obviously as it is the Metrocentre there is tons of free parking and public transport options available.

I would recommend booking in advance as it can get busy. For any extra information about Clip n Climb then check out their website www.clipnclimbmetrocentre.com  which includes opening times, prices and any need to know information. They also offer birthday parties, pre-school sessions and sometimes run special offers too which can all be found on their website or social media pages.

I have a video of the visit to Clip n Climb Metrocentre over on my TikTok (username is NewcastleFamilyLife) or photos over on my Instagram (also NewcastleFamilyLife) where I share other local day out ideas.
