It is the summer holidays and days out with the kids can be expensive so I have been determined to explore more of the North East this summer, as we have some fab low-cost days out in the region. Somewhere we have not explored much of is Sunderland, so I decided to explore it a bit this summer with the kids - aged nine and eleven years old.
As I don't know Sunderland very well I thought it was best if we explored it via public transport, especially as children aged eleven and under travel for free this summer on Go North East buses in the region - making it a super affordable day out.
We got the metro from Newcastle into Sunderland and hopped onto the Sunderland Connect bus 700 operated by Go North East. This service connects Sunderland to many of the must see sights such as the stadium of light, the national glass centre and even Roker during the summer. It was super affordable too with my ticket costing just £1.80 and the children travelling for free! My eldest daughter also came on the day out with us she is 21 and was a student at Sunderland Uni so she was also able to travel for free with her student ID badge.
We decided to head to Roker for the day as it was a lovely sunny day, perfect for a day at the coast. The bus journey took less than 20 minutes and dropped us off just a few minutes walk from the beach.
It was the first time I had ever visited Roker beach and it was so lovely with a play park, lots of families on the beach enjoying the nice weather, plenty of places for food and drinks and public toilets. The children headed straight for the beach and spent time paddling in the sea, jumping waves and looking for shells and sea-glass. We had such a nice time, sometimes the simple and free things in life are the most fun.
After a lovely relaxing morning on the beach we decided to head to Love Lily which is located right on the beachfront. We were able to get a outside table straightaway and ordered some instagramable milkshakes and an epic Battenberg Latte (it was delicious) along with some pancake stacks which the children really enjoyed.
We then went for a walk stopping off at a cute little sweet shop for some slushes and sweets to take home.
We had a lovely day out in Sunderland the Sunderland Connect bus made it really easy for us to get to Roker seafront. If you are looking for something low-cost to do with the kids this summer than I definitely recommend a visit to Roker as we had such a lush little day out.
