Looking for somewhere to head for lunch in Newcastle with the kids? Then I would recommend Umai Mi in Eldon Square, Newcastle. I visited last week with the kids (aged 8 and 9) and they loved it!
Umai Mi is located within Greys Quarter in the bustling Eldon Square shopping centre in the heart of the city. It is the perfect location for lunch as a family when shopping in Newcastle city centre. Umai Mi is a oriental kitchen serving up yummy dishes such as sushi, dim sum, poke bowls and noodle dishes to name just a few. They have a range of menus such as a main menu, lunchtime menu, kids menu and they also cater for vegans, veggies and have gluten free options available too.
We visited on a weekday lunchtime during half-term so I dined off the lunch time menu which is £15 for two courses. Children's meals are a total bargain at £5.99 for a main and dessert. Children are provided with menus they can colour and complete activities on, which kept mine entertained whilst they waited for their meals to arrive.
Children's Meals
As mentioned children's meals are just £5.99 for a main and pudding which I thought was really good value. Children have the choice of Stir fried chicken or veggie noodles, chicken katsu with fries, Tempura fish and chips, chicken fried rice or sushi. My son, aged 8 wanted to try everything on the menu but finally settled on the chicken Katsu with fries and a side of curry sauce.
My daughter, aged 9 is a fussy eater but she choose the Tempura fish and chips which she really enjoyed. The server offered the children the choice of sauce to accompany their meals which included ketchup, mayo, garlic and curry. You are offered chopsticks to eat your meal with, my daughter loves eaten with chopsticks but the rest of us used the cutlery provided.
The children meals were generous portion sizes. There is a choice of ice cream and sorbets for pudding, both mine opted for vanilla ice cream. Children also have the choice of milk, cordial and soda or fruit shoots to drink.
Lunch Menu
I dined off the lunch time menu which was £15 for two courses or £18 for three, it is available Sunday to Friday 12 until 5pm. I went for the two courses of a starter and main meal. Starters or small eats as they are called included Thai style prawn crackers, sushi, edamame beans, garlic ribs and tofu. I ordered the salt and pepper prawns and they were delicious - would 100% recommend.
For mains choices included sushi, ramen, noodles, sizzling hot plates and donburi. I ordered sweet and sour chicken with jasmine rice and again it was absolutely delicious but a very generous portion size - I couldn't eat it all.
What We Thought
All three of us enjoyed our meal at Umai Mi Newcastle, the food was delicious and is good value, service was great and the setting is ideal. The children were made to feel very welcome and lots of other families were also dining at Umai Mi too during our visit. The children have already asked to return as my son is desperate to try more dishes from the menu, he has his eye on the noodles or fried rice next time. It is somewhere that we will be returning to in the future and I would recommend it to anyone wanting a lunch out in Newcastle city centre with children.
