Revolution De Cuba has recently opened its doors here in Newcastle, bringing the carnival back to the Bigg market area, which is having a bit of a makeover these days. Based in the old pig and whistle bar the venue has had an impressive makeover and is a welcome addition to the area. Revolution De Cuba is set over three floors and I can see it becoming very popular with the locals over the coming months.
I visited Revolution De Cuba last week with my teenage daughter to see what all the fuss was about. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch whilst listening to some live Latin music in the cheery tropical inspired dining area, which almost made you think you were somewhere exotic and not in grey and rainy Newcastle.
First impressions were good as the staff were really helpful and friendly, showing us to a table and explaining the menu. The atmosphere was lovely and relaxing and there was a real mix of people dining in the restaurant, from groups of friends catching up over cocktails to couples enjoy a romantic meal and families enjoying some lunch.
From tapas, Cuban dishes, burritos, burgers and sandwiches there is sure to be a dish on the menu to please everyone. The only hard part was deciding what to order as it all sounded rather delicious.
I finally settled on the Cheeseburger Tacos for starter (£5.75) from the tapas menu, it was lightly seasoned beef mince topped with melting Manchego cheese and served on three soft corn tacos.
My teenage daughter opted for the Smokey Chicken Skewers (£6.00) again from the tapas menu, which is 2-4-1 on a Sunday. Three juicy chicken skewers arrived with a side of salsa and they were delicious.
Onto mains and I decided to try the Paella de Cuba (£10.50) an aromatic rice piled with prawns, marinated chunks of chicken and smoky chorizo and topped with pico de gallo. This dish was bursting with flavour and packed full of meat and prawns. It was so filling that I only managed to eat half of it.
My daughter ordered the Cuban Cheeseburger (£10.50) which was a premium 8oz steak burger served in a toasted bun with melting manchego cheese and cheddar cheese. This came with a side of crispy fries and a delicious pot of rum mayo.
By this point, we were both very full but my teen never misses the chance to have dessert, no matter how full she is. She ordered the Chocolate Brownie (£4.50) which was a chocolate brownie drizzled with rum caramel, served with vanilla pod ice cream, fresh strawberry and a sprinkle of basil sugar.
The Passionfruit and Mango cheesecake (£4.50) was what I ordered and this was the perfect way to finish my meal. Baked cheesecake topped with sweet mango and tangy passionfruit. It was delicious.
We had a really nice lunch at Revolution De Cuba, the food was nice, staff were friendly, it was a lovely relaxed atmosphere and the venue was looking fab.
