Cookhouse And Pub Holystone Family Meal - Review

We have visited the Cookhouse and Pub Holystone a few times over the last couple of years but this was the first time we have visited with all three children. After a busy morning of swimming lessons and shopping, we headed to the Cookhouse and Pub with rumbling tummies on Saturday lunchtime. We were warmly greeted and shown to a seat in the conservatory area which is bright, modern and perfectly cosy on a crisp autumn day. 

Activity sheets and crayons were provided for the children along with little pots of popcorn for them to nibble on whilst we pursued the menu. They were also offered vegetable sticks but they passed on these. 

Cookhouse and Pub have just launched a new autumn menu, with new additions such as a vegan fake and ale pie to sample. As it was only lunch-time we skipped starters on this occasion all opting to just order mains. 

I went for an all-time favourite pub classic dish, breaded scampi with chips, garden peas and tartare sauce (£8.79) - pure comfort on a plate. My teen was pleased to see chicken tikka curry on the menu which was a very generous portion of curry served with basmati rice, plain naan bread, poppadom and sweet mango chutney (£8.29). 

Sticking to the pub classic theme my dad ordered sausage and mash served with garden peas and lashings of gravy (£8.49). 

Kids meals were good value at just £4.99 for two courses, you can add a third course for just 75p more. Kids drinks were also super reasonable at just 80p for a bottle of milk or 60p for a bottle of squash. Every single time we go out for food the children order the same thing - one likes beef burgers and the other likes chicken nuggets. Luckily both were on the menu and came with sides of chips and a mini corn on the cob. 

Service was quick and friendly and there was a lovely relaxed vibe to the pub with groups of families, couples and friends dining. 

All of the meals were hot, tasty and we had clean plates all round as even the children demolished their meals. Despite eating more than they normally do all three children had room for dessert - isn't that always the case? 

The little two ordered doughnuts and pancakes off the kid's menu, whilst myself and the teenager ordered the half baked cookie dough (£4.79). The children were invited up to the bar / kitchen area to help make their own puddings which they were super excited about. They got to select which sauces and toppings they would like on their pudding plates along with their choice of pancakes or doughnuts. 

My daughter came back with a plate full of chocolate buttons, a flake, marshmallows, chocolate beans, strawberry laces, wafers and chocolate and caramel sauce to dip her mini doughnuts in. My son is healthier and packed his full of sliced strawberries and bananas with a few buttons and marshmallows and an assortment of sauces to go with his pancakes. They absolutely loved being able to create their own puddings and pick and choose what they wanted on their plates. 

My cookie dough was pretty good too, warm and gooey with a scoop of melting vanilla ice cream on top. 

We had a nice cosy hour and a half at Cookhouse and Pub Holystone, we all enjoyed our meals and we all left with full tummies and the children asking when can they come back to make another pudding.
