I was recently invited to St Mary's Inn to try out their afternoon tea and with it being so close to fathers day I decided to take my dad and teenage daughter along with me.
St Mary's Inn is a pub and B&B located in Stannington near Morpeth, just past Whitehouse farm and is the sister venue of beautiful Jesmond Dene house. I have seen so many people post photos on Instagram of the delicious meals and afternoon tea that St Mary's Inn serve, so I was really looking forward to my visit.
We arrived and were impressed with just how welcoming the bar area was, it was very relaxed and informal with a laid back country vibe to the grand former hospital building. St Mary's Inn is dog and child friendly and we noticed lots of dogs enjoying being out with their owners and there was also lots of children enjoying meals with their families.
It was not long before the afternoon tea's arrived and we were impressed with just how lovely it all looked. The afternoon tea consisted of four different sandwiches, three freshly made scones and four cakes. Everything was freshly made, beautifully presented and most importantly of all delicious!
We started off with the sandwiches which were Arlington Egg Mayonnaise, Ham and Pease Pudding, Roast Beef and Horseradish and Tuna Mayonnaise. All the sandwiches were on lovely soft breads and had lots of fillings.
The scones were the perfect size to enjoy with an afternoon tea. We had three scones each which were plain, spiced fruit & blackberry and Keens Cheddar cheese flavours.
Then it was on to the cakes! Each one was a little mini work of art as they all looked so beautiful and almost too good to eat.
The rhubarb sundae was utterly scrummy the fresh sharp tang of the rhubarb worked so well with the creamy sundae and crunchy biscuit topping. We also had a chocolate & orange macaroon, extremely chocolaty brownie and a delicious little lemon sponge with cream cheese frosting.
We were so full from all of the delicious food that we could not finish all of the cakes, luckily the staff at St Mary's boxed them up for us to take home. We really enjoyed afternoon tea and I think that it is fantastic value at just £14.95 per person.
