10 Netflix Shows I Have Enjoyed Watching

As a thirty-something mam of three at the end of the day when the kids are tucked up nice and cosy in bed, I love nothing more than plonking myself in front of the telly and spending a few hours binge-watching Netflix box-sets. I'm a mam and I'm knackered at the end of the day and don't get out much so Netflix keeps me occupied. I don't normally watch a lot of TV as I always forget when shows I like the look of are on and I have never really been into films, but boxsets I really like as I can dip in and out of them when I fancy, or more often than not binge-watch them over a few days or weeks - depending on the show.

I am always looking for recommendations of shows to watch and have a pretty eclectic mix of programmes I watch, although detective/ crime type shows worrying seems to feature quite a bit. So if you are looking for some shows to watch, here are ten that I have watched on Netflix over the past year and enjoyed.

1.) Bates Motel

This is hands down the best programme I have watched in a long time and I was totally gripped and binge-watched all five seasons over a few weeks. It is a modern prequel to the horror film Psycho (which I have never seen BTW) and is an American psychological drama and is actually so much better than it sounds. Teenager Norman Bates and his mother move to a small American town after buying the local B&B following the death of his father, but all is not what it seems in the small town. Norma and Norman have a strange relationship and as Normans, mental health suffers he starts acting irrationally. The show has so many twists and turns and I was hooked after a few episodes.

2.) Stranger Things

In 2017 I watched Stranger Things season 1 and 2 and have been counting down for the third series this year. Stranger Things is not something that I would normally watch as I am not a fan of sci-fi type shows but I was hooked on this. Set in the 80s in America it follows a group of teenage friends trying to find their lost friend, with supernatural powers, supernatural going on's, love and friendship it is a show myself and my teen both enjoyed.

3.) Orange Is The New Black

The very first show I ever watched on Netflix was Orange is the New Black, I love the characters and following their crazy lives behind bars in Litchfield prison. I was hooked on the first few series but kind of went off it a bit as the main character Piper is just annoying and not very believable, however, I really liked the most recent 6th series and I am looking forward to the final series later this year. I have laughed and cried at this show (when one of the characters dies in an unfair way) it is full of drama, comedy moments and real-life issues and is perfect for dipping in and out of.

4.) The Crown

So many people recommended The Crown to me that I decided to have a watch, even though I am not really into the Royals. I was so glad I watched though as I found this show fascinating and have a new found respect for the Queen since watching. The historical drama follows Queen Elizabeth and her family and politicians from the 1940s until the modern time. It is lavish and filmed in the most beautiful settings and really is a great watch. I am looking forward to season 3 later in the year and hope I like the new cast as much as the old one.

5.) 13 Reasons Why

This hard-hitting American teen drama is not at all what I would normally watch but as a parent to a teenage daughter who watched the show I wanted to see what it was all about. The two series of this are a bit harrowing, it shows suicide, rape and abuse and can be uncomfortable to watch in parts but I think that any parent to a teen should give this a watch as it is a bit of an eye-opener.

6.) Jessica Jones

I am not a Marvel fan at all so this show didn't really appeal to me at first but I am glad I give it a watch. Following the mysterious Marvel character Jessica Jones a detective with some extraordinary powers. Full of drama it is a superhero tale that I actually like and I have watched both seasons.

7.) Glow

Set in the 80s Glow stands for Gorgeous ladies of wrestling and follows a group of women as they try and break into female wrestling. Both seasons were worth watching as the characters are entertaining and it was easy viewing.

8.) Santa Clarita Diet

Drew Barrymore stars in this hilarious show about turning into a cannibal, it sounds gruesome but it really isn't. She gets a taste for blood and her family go along with it, killing undesirable people to help quench her taste for blood. It was funny, light-hearted drama and I hope they bring it back for a third season.

9.) The Sinner

Series one and two of this detective drama show are based on different stories with the same American detective trying to crack. Full of twist and turns and sinister secrets we found out what drove the characters to commit murder.

10.) Marie Kondo

Love, love, love this tidying show presented by the woman behind the Magic Tidying book. I read the book last year and didn't really connect with it, however watching the programme has made me want to de-clutter, tidy and reorganise my entire home. What she says makes sense and seeing the effect of decluttering a home can have on its occupants is really uplifting to watch.

So those are some of the programs I have enjoyed watching on Netflix recently, let me know what shows you would recommend in the comments below as I am always on the lookout for new things to watch. I am currently watching BBC drama Luther on Netflix and can't believe I have only just discovered it now.
