Other Bloggers Family Lives Featuring Home and Horizon

This week on Other Bloggers Family Lives I am featuring Lauretta who blogs at family lifestyle and travel blog Home and Horizon. Lauretta blogs about family life with two children, her home and travel and adventures her family have been on. So let's find out more about the family behind Home and Horizon.

1.) Tell me a bit about yourself and your family?

I'm mum to Nadja - 11 (who vlogs at Girlwrighter) and Luis who is 13 and I'm married to Mr Wright, who I refer to as VIP on my blog (because he is). We have four rabbits - Jessica, Bo, Pippin and Pudding who are all adorable and we love teaching them new tricks.

I'm glad I'm now past the stage of having toddlers/young kids in the house - life has become a lot easier with a tween and teen (in terms of having more flexibility), although dealing with hormones takes its toll sometimes.

2.) Where do you live?

We live in Greater London/Kent and are ideally placed for getting into the Capital easily enough, yet is just a 10-minute drive from beautiful little villages in the Kent countryside.

3.) What is your favourite thing to do as a family where you live?

The kids are starting to get a little bit of independence now, so they enjoy activities like bowling and going to the cinema with friends. But as a family, we enjoy exploring new towns and villages and can often be found going on countryside walks. We do have to bribe the kids with extra screen time on their devices though! It's becoming harder and harder to get them enthused about walking! At home, we tend to play family games on a Sunday like Pictionary or building with Lego, which is one of my favourite things to do.

4.) Did you grow up close to where you live now and what are your favourite things to do as a family where you live?

Growing up we moved around quite a lot as a family. I didn't settle in Kent until I was 12 and we moved from Preston. I was the only kid in the school with a really strong northern accent, so to avoid me getting picked on my parents sent me to elocution lessons! I don't have many memories from childhood, but I do remember being the class clown in my early teens.

5.) If you could live anywhere where would you?

Although I am a huge fan of travelling, I'm a real homebody at heart and love being in the comfort of my own home. I've created spaces that suit our busy lifestyle as a family - and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Besides we have great shops in the UK, living in another country and being unable to visit my favourite shops would just frustrate me. The only thing I would change about living in the UK would be the weather - I'm a real summer girl at heart and would love a year-round temperate climate.

6.) Have you got any exciting family plans for the year ahead?

Well, I have just left my job to blog full-time, I'm really excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. Working for myself means that I can dedicate more time to my kids - and I've got plans to get them cooking and baking more (great life skills!), plus I can start enjoying the school performances without asking for time off work - the pros definitely outweigh the cons. But what I'd love to do over the next 12 months is to keep exploring - taking as many short breaks and holidays as we can afford and just get out there and create some great family memories together (before time flies and they leave home).

7.) What is your favourite thing about family life?

I'm incredibly proud of my family. I've raised my kids to be respectful of others and to be polite - manners cost nothing as they say! Whenever my kids go to their friend's house or are away on sleepovers, parents will always comment on how polite and helpful they've been and my heart swells. They can be rude to me at home sometimes (and seemingly ungrateful at times), but as long as they respect others and behave themselves when out and about, I know that ultimately, I'm on the right path. My favourite thing about family life is knowing that we've got each other's backs. If one of us needs extra help, we'll all chip in together to see that person through a tricky time. Even the kids help one another with homework and chores sometimes, that is when they are not busy winding each other up!

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions, Lauretta, it sounds lovely where you live being close to the city and the countryside. Good luck with blogging full-time since leaving your job, I hope it works out for you and you enjoy spending the extra time with your family.

  7. Another tip for getting older children and teens out on walks - either promise them a hot chocolate/ice cream (weather depending) when you get home, or take a kite/ball out (they tend to forget they are walking when they are playing!)
