Cookhouse And Pub Holystone Review

Just before Christmas, we were invited along to the Cookhouse and Pub in Holystone, North Tyneside which is just a five-minute drive from where we live (Just off the A19 and near Benton Asda). Locals will probably remember the Cookhouse as previously being called the Stonebrook which served up traditional pub food. Well, it has had a whole new refit and has rebranded into the Cookhouse and pub and I have to say we were seriously impressed.

The pub is now very well presented, it has a really modern yet cosy feel to it with an open plan kitchen, large bar area and cosy tables dotted around and dim lighting. We visited on a Saturday evening with the in-laws and were warmly greeted upon arrival by the friendly and welcoming staff and shown to a table by the window. The weather outside was freezing cold but it was lovely and warm and cosy inside the pub and we instantly felt at home.

Drink orders were taking and despite being tempted by the great range of drinks on offer such as gin and tonics and handmade cocktails and a decent wine list we opted for refillable soft drinks (£2.80). As well as the standard main menu they also had a festive menu featuring classics such as Turkey dinners and Christmas pudding, a specials board and if you are dining before 5pm on a weekday a value menu. We were not dining with the children on this occasion but I had a look at the children's menu and it sounds ideal for young children like my own, it was a bargain too at just £4.99 for 2 courses.

The menu features a good selection of grills, burgers, fish dishes and pub classics along with some healthier choices and a good range of grazers to share. As it was almost Christmas we all ordered Prawn cocktail to start (£4.69) the portion was generous and the prawns were delicious and juicy.

For mains, we all ordered something different I went for the smothered chicken (£8.79) which I nearly always order when we dine out. This was without a doubt the nicest smothered chicken I have had, the grilled chicken breast was perfectly cooked and not to dry and the amount of BBQ sauce was just right. My dish came with chips, garlic bread and a delicious dressed salad.

The other half went for the C&P Ultimate burger (£10.79) which consisted of two 4oz burgers, streaky bacon, cheese, cheese sauce, tobacco onions, fried mushrooms, baconnaise served in a brioche bun, topped with a pickle and served with sweet potato fries (he switched from regular chips) and chunky slaw. It was a monster of a burger but he thoroughly enjoyed tucking into it.

Other dishes ordered were a turkey dinner from the festive menu and a Mixed Grill (£11.99) which was huge and I had serious food envy for as the onion rings looked delicious! A 6oz steak, gammon steak, chicken breast fillet, two pork sausages, two fried eggs, four onion rings, chips, peas and grilled tomatoes. Served with a Bearnaise sauce (£1.29).

We were all stuffed with mains but the dessert menu looked far too tempting to pass up. I opted for the trio of mini puds (£5.99) as I just could not make up my mind what to order. The trio consisted of a creamy lemon mouse, a mini gooey chocolate mud pie and mini apple crumble with custard. I was in dessert heaven as each pub was so moreish and it was nice to try them all out and they complimented each other well.

Overal we were really impressed with the quality of the food on our visit, every dish tasted delicious and we have already planned to re-visit very soon as a family. In fact, my in-laws enjoyed the visit so much they returned a few days later! The service we received was fantastic, every member of staff was really friendly and welcoming and we did not feel rushed at all during our visit. The pub itself is also very welcoming and is somewhere that I could happily return to and spend a few hours, I also found the prices really great value too.

If you are looking for somewhere to dine in the North Tyneside area then I really do recommend the Cookhouse and pub. It is ideal for date night, a family meal or a catch-up with friends and I for one am already looking forward to returning in the near future.
