Cote Brasserie Newcastle Review

A couple of weeks ago Cote Brasserie opened a new branch here in Newcastle, I was invited to the press night but unfortunately could not attend and luckily I was booked in for an evening meal a week later instead. Located in the former Barclays bank building on Grainger street you will find Cote Brasserie, and what a transformation it has been under. The building has been transformed with rustic, yet luxurious decor that almost makes you feel you are at a Parisian bistro and not in cold Newcastle.

As soon as we entered we were made to feel welcome from the friendly and attentive staff, we had a reservation for 6pm and already the restaurant was bustling with couples, groups of friends and families enjoy good food together. With low lighting, candles and soft music in the background, it really was the perfect setting for a child-free meal with my other half after work. We were shown to a cosy window-side table, which was great for watching the world go by as we were snug in the warmth of the brasserie.

I had been sent to review the A la carte menu but due to a slight mix-up we ended up ordering off the set menu, which I must say is amazing value at just £11.50 for two courses or £13.50 for three courses. For starters, I opted for the Chicken Liver Parfait and the other half opted for the Langoustine Tails. Our starters arrived fairly promptly and we could not wait to tuck in after seeing the delicious dishes coming from the kitchen.

My Chicken Liver Parfait was served with chargrilled baguette and cornichons and was delicious, the bread was perfectly toasted and the parfait was silky and packed full of flavour.

The other halfs Langoustine Tails were served sauteed and breaded and served with a rocket garnish and mayonnaise verte dip. The portion size was generous for a starter and he thoroughly enjoyed this dish and cleared his plate in minutes.

It was not long before our mains arrived, I ordered the Poulet Grille which was a chargrilled chicken breast served with gratin potatoes and a watercress, veal and thyme jus. This dish was amazing, for such a simple dish it was packed with flavour from the jus, the chicken was nice and tender and the gratin worked well with the dish. I would definitely order this dish again when I revisit.

The other half went for the Moules Frites, mussels cooked with white wine, garlic, shallots, parsley and fresh cream and served with a portion of frites. The mussels were huge and such a big portion, the sauce had marinated the muscles so that they were bursting with flavour and he enjoyed dipping his frites into the creamy, garlic sauce too.

Once we had finished our mains we were both suitably impressed and my other half had already declared that he could not wait to return. It was so nice to just relax with a nice bottle of wine catching up in lovely surroundings, enjoying good food.

Onto desserts and the other half went for the Praline Crepe, a chocolate and praline crepe with caramelised bananas and creme chantilly. Again this was a dish he thoroughly enjoyed and was the perfect size to finish off a filling meal.

I decided to order the Tarte Au Citron, a traditional lemon tart with Normandy creme fraiche and raspberries. This was amazing, the tart was full of zest and tasted so good with the light, crumbly pastry, fresh raspberries and creme fraiche. I highly recommend this dessert if you visit as it was so refreshing and moreish.

We both really enjoyed our visit to Cote Brasserie, the restaurant is so cosy and inviting inside, the staff are lovely and attentive and it just has such a lovely atmosphere. It really is the perfect place to go for date night, a meal with friends or a pre-theatre meal in town - as it is just a stone's throw from the Theater Royal. The food was delicious and I just know that we will be returning soon as if we enjoyed the set menu so much I just know that we love the A la carte menu too.

You can find Cote Brasserie at 120-122 Grainger street. You can find out more and view the menus at www.cote.co.uk

Disclosure I received a complimentary meal for the purpose of this review, however, all opinions are my own.
