You just can't beat a spring time Easter trip to the farm, seeing all the newborn baby animals and getting outside in the countryside is fun for the whole family. Living just outside of Newcastle my favourite farm that we have been visiting for many years is Whitehouse Farm (near Morpeth), which is celebrating its 20th birthday this year!
Last week I visited with my two pre-schoolers (aged 2 and 3) and we had a brilliant time.
Whitehouse Farm is located just outside of Morpeth, just off the A1 and is about a 20 minutes drive north from Newcastle. There is plenty of free onsite parking available. It is best to pre-book online in advance but you can also pay on the day upon arrival. Entrance fees for a weekend or school holiday are £9.95 per adult, children aged 2-16 years are £8.95 or family tickets (2 adults and 2 children) are £34.50. If you visit during the week in term time prices are slightly cheaper. Prices Correct as of April 2017.
As soon as we entered the farm we were greeted by the tweeting birds in the aviary before making our way to the petting barn. The meerkats were outside in their outdoor enclosure and inside the petting barn Coco, the talking parrot was a big hit, especially when it kept saying "hello".
We visited the creepy crawlies, snakes and lizards before cooing over the fluffy animals like rabbits, guinea pigs and not so fluffy skinny pigs. Discovering an incubator full of fluffy yellow baby chicks was a highlight for my daughter.
We loved feeding the goats at the bottom of the petting barn area, they were very greedy which caused many laughs. We also saw many other goats and baby goats in the indoor barn area along with so many baby lambs which you can feed at certain times during the day.
We saw so many different kinds of animals on our visit lambs, goats, chicks, hens, pigs, cows, emu, wallabies, skunks and hedgehogs, snakes, lizards, spiders and bugs, rabbits, guinea pigs and skinny pigs, mice, rats and parrots. There were so many birds including a huge collection of owls. We saw tortoises, meerkats, marmaset monkeys, donkeys, ponies, deer, llamas and alpacas. The children were fascinated.
As well as the animals there are lots of other things to do, we visited the indoor soft play barn and the park it has climbing walls, slides, swings and playhouses. You can play on the ride on tractor rides which my two loved, you can also ride around a go-kart track and go on an actual tractor trailer ride or visit the willow maze. They have a coin-operated racing track, trampolines, bouncy castles and a doughnut dash ride.
There is a lot of seating and picnic benches dotted around the farm, along with a large indoor picnic barn and a cafe serving hot and cold meals and snacks.
Despite being a farm it is also really accessible too and you could easily manage to take a buggy with you if needed. You could easily stay at the farm all day as there is just so much to do.
If you visit Whitehouse Farm during this Easter half-term there is so much going on not only can you bottle fed lambs but you can also take part in Easter games and activities, there are magic shows, face painting and crafts. There will also be the chance to attend talks and pet animals and critters throughout the day.
My children really had such a great time at Whitehouse farm, they never stopped laughing and smiling and they really enjoyed meeting all the animals. The park and soft-play and all of the extra activities will also be sure to delight children and keep them entertained.
